A yearly flush for a longer-lasting tank
Hard water leaves minerals behind every time a tank heats up. Over a year they settle on the bottom, and that layer is what wears a water heater out early.
What builds up
Calcium and other minerals come out of the water as it heats and settle in the bottom of the tank as sediment. The harder the water, the faster it piles up.
What sediment does
On a gas heater it sits between the burner and the water, so the tank runs longer to heat the same water and the bottom runs hotter. On an electric heater it can bury the lower element. Both cost more to run and wear out sooner.
What a flush does
The tank is drained through the valve at the bottom with fresh water running in, until it comes out clear. That carries the loose sediment out before it hardens into a layer.
When a flush is not the fix
On an older tank that has never been flushed, the sediment can be packed hard and the drain valve may clog or not reseal. A tank that is leaking or rusty inside needs replacing, not flushing.
Questions we get asked
How often should a water heater be flushed?
Once a year is a good rule. In very hard water, or with a big family, every six months keeps ahead of the buildup.Do tankless water heaters need flushing?
They need a descaling flush instead, with a pump and a cleaning solution run through the heat exchanger. Most makers call for it about once a year in hard water. Will flushing stop the popping noise?
Often it helps, because the popping is water trapped under the sediment. If the layer is packed hard, flushing may only quiet it for a while.Plumbing questions we answer
