The bottle under the sink plumbers wince at

Chemical drain cleaner promises to clear a clog in minutes. Often it makes a small hole in the clog, leaves the rest, and adds a pipe full of chemicals to the problem.

How it works

Most bottled cleaners use lye, bleach or acid that heats up and eats at hair, grease and soap. That heat and that chemical do not know the difference between the clog and the pipe or the joints holding it together.

What it does to the plumbing

Repeated use is hard on older metal drains, the glue joints in plastic pipe and the rubber parts in a trap or disposal. On a septic system it kills the bacteria the tank relies on.

Why it often does not work

A clog of hair or grease far down the line usually gets a hole punched through it, so the drain runs for a week and slows again. If the line is fully blocked, the cleaner just sits in the pipe.

What to try instead

Clean the stopper and trap, use a plastic drain strip for hair, or a plunger with a good seal. A drain that keeps clogging, or more than one slow drain at once, needs the line cleaned out properly.

Questions we get asked

Is it dangerous to plunge after using drain cleaner?Yes. Plunging can splash the chemical back up at you. If you have already poured some in, tell the plumber before any work starts so they can protect themselves.
Are enzyme drain cleaners safer?Enzyme or bacteria products are gentler and safe for septic, but they work slowly. They help keep a drain clear more than they open a blocked one.
Is boiling water a good idea?Hot tap water is fine. Boiling water can soften plastic drain pipe and crack a porcelain toilet bowl, so it is not worth the risk.
