Bringing gas where you want to cook

Switching to a gas range or adding a grill on the patio means a new branch off the gas line. Done right, it is a short job. Done wrong, it is the one plumbing job that can hurt somebody.

Is there enough gas for it?

A gas line is sized for the appliances already on it. Adding a range or a big outdoor burner can starve the water heater or furnace if the pipe is too small. The new load gets added up and the line is sized for all of it, from the meter or tank on.

A shut-off at every appliance

Each gas appliance gets its own shut-off valve in reach, so it can be turned off without shutting down the house. Ranges and dryers connect with an approved flexible connector, not a garden-type hose.

Tested before it is used

New gas piping is pressure tested before it is turned on, to prove there are no leaks. Then the appliance is lit and checked. A bubble test on the fittings is the last check, never the only one.

Outdoor lines

A line to a grill, fire pit or outdoor kitchen runs underground or along the house in pipe made for the job, at the right depth, with a shut-off outside. Propane and natural gas use different fittings on the appliance, so the grill has to match the fuel.

Questions we get asked

Can the old flexible connector be reused on a new range? No. A gas connector is made to be installed once. A new appliance gets a new connector of the right size and length.
Can a natural gas grill run on propane? Not without the right conversion kit. Propane and natural gas run at different pressures and need different orifices, and the wrong one can make a dangerous flame.
Why is my gas dryer vented outside but my range is not?A dryer pushes out lint and moisture as well as combustion gases, so it always vents outdoors. A household range is made to burn in the kitchen, which is why a working range hood matters.
