The water heater that groans in the dark

A tank water heater that pops, crackles, rumbles or groans while it is heating is almost always telling you about sediment on the bottom of the tank. It is not haunted, but it is worth listening to.

What the noise is

Minerals in the water settle to the bottom of the tank as it heats. Over time they build a crusty layer right over the burner or the lower element. Water gets trapped under that layer, boils in little pockets and bursts up through it. Each burst is a pop. Lots of them together is the rumble.

Why it happens faster here

Hard water carries more minerals, so the layer builds faster. In much of Parker and Wise County a tank that is never flushed can be noisy within a few years.

What it costs you

Sediment sits between the heat and the water, so the heater burns more gas or electricity to do the same job. It also overheats the bottom of the tank, which wears the tank and, on an electric heater, can burn out the lower element.

What to do about it

Caught early, draining and flushing the tank clears most of the sediment and quiets it down. If the layer has hardened for years, a flush may only loosen part of it, and a heater that is also old or leaking is often due for replacement. A plumber can tell you which you have.

Questions we get asked

Is a popping water heater dangerous? The noise itself is not, but it means the tank is working harder and wearing faster. If you also see water around the base or the relief valve dripping, have it checked soon.
Can I flush my water heater myself? Many people do, through the drain valve at the bottom. On an older tank the valve can clog or start leaking once it is opened, so it is worth having a plumber do the first one.
How often should a tank be flushed?Once a year is a good habit, and more often with hard water. A tank that is flushed regularly stays quieter and lasts longer.
