Something gurgling in the drains
A gurgle from a sink or tub after a toilet flushes, or while the tub drains, is air being pulled through the water in a trap. It is a sign the drain is not breathing the way it should.
What the gurgle is
Every drain has a trap, the bend under the sink or in the floor that holds a little water to keep sewer gas out. Water running down a drain needs air behind it. When it cannot get that air from the vent, it pulls it through the nearest trap instead, and that is the gurgle.
One drain, or several?
If only one fixture gurgles, the problem is usually on that drain: a partial clog in its line or its trap. If several drains gurgle, especially when a toilet flushes or the washing machine empties, look at the main line or at the vent the whole house shares.
Clog or vent?
A partial clog slows the water and lets it gulp air past the blockage. A blocked vent on the roof, from leaves, a nest or debris, leaves the drains nowhere to draw air from. A drain that runs slow as well as gurgling points to a clog; drains that run at normal speed but still gurgle point more to the vent.
Why not leave it
A gurgle can pull enough water out of a trap to empty it. An empty trap lets sewer gas into the house, which is the smell people notice next. And a partial clog in the main line tends to become a full one at the worst time.

My sink gurgles when the toilet flushes. Why?
The two share a drain line, and the rush of water from the toilet is pulling air through the sink trap. It usually means a partial clog downstream of both, or a vent that is not doing its job.Can I pour drain cleaner down it?
It is hard on pipes and rarely reaches a clog in the main line, and it does nothing for a blocked vent. A drain that keeps gurgling needs the line cleaned or the vent cleared.Is a gurgling drain an emergency?
