Trim-out
Everything up to here is buried. Trim-out is the part the people living in the house will actually touch every day for the next twenty years.

What goes in at this stage
Faucets, toilets, sinks, tub and shower valves and trim, the water heater, the disposal, the shut-off valves under everything, and the supply lines between them. It happens after the tile, the counters and the paint, which is why it is done carefully and slowly.
A shut-off under every fixture
Every sink and every toilet gets its own stop. It costs almost nothing at this stage and it is the difference, one night in February, between turning one handle and standing in the yard in the dark looking for the main.
Every fixture is run before we leave
Hot on the hot side, cold on the cold, the drain checked under the cabinet with the water actually running, the toilet filled and flushed and the floor round it dry. A fixture that has never been run has not been installed, it has just been attached.
Why trim is where the quality shows
Nobody sees a drain under a slab. Everybody sees a faucet that is straight, a toilet that does not rock and a shower handle that lines up. A shop that takes trouble on the parts you cannot see is a shop that takes trouble here too — and the reverse is just as reliable.
Questions we get asked
Can I supply my own fixtures?
Yes, plenty of people do. The thing worth knowing is that the fixture has to suit the rough-in that is already in the wall — a wall-mount tap and a deck-mount tap want different things behind them, and that decision is best made before the walls close. How long does a trim-out take?
It depends on the number of fixtures and whether the rough-in was done properly. A house where everything is where it should be trims out quickly. A house where it is not is where the time goes. The rest of the job
